Amy Shuler Goodwin
Amy Shuler Goodwin was elected in 2018 as the first female Mayor of Charleston, West Virginia, and was re-elected in 2022. Since taking office, she has focused on transparent and efficient government, investment in critical infrastructure, people-focused solutions, strong neighborhoods, and community partnerships.
Goodwin brings to public office a career spanning journalism, communications, government, and higher education. Before becoming Mayor, she served as Communications Director for several governors, a congressman, two presidential candidates, and a former Charleston mayor. Goodwin also served as West Virginia’s Commissioner of Tourism and Deputy Secretary of Commerce. She previously worked as a television anchor and reporter, owned and managed a public relations firm, and taught senior-level public relations courses at West Virginia University and the University of Charleston.
Her experience on both sides of the reporter-government relationship provides a unique perspective on the role local journalism plays in keeping communities informed, connecting residents with their government, and fostering civic engagement.
