Producer's Blog #4

|

The process for show 3 was different than what we as a class had done previously for the first two shows. Spring Break was the week right before taping which meant everyone’s due dates and packages were due earlier than they usually were. I was proud of everyone for being able to make great packages with a tight turnaround. This show’s writing conferences went well. I feel like I am getting an eye for details and able to pick up on what needs to be fixed and what is good. Everyone’s fixes for their packages were shorter than the past two shows which let me know that the reporters are taking the fixes that are given to them and creating packages with those fixes in mind.

In terms of writing the script, my AP and I had an extra day to complete the script due to Spring Break, but it was still hectic. I had my other sports job to work so I was writing the script while working WVU baseball and the NCAA Rifle Championship which was definitely hard trying to balance both, but I made it work. Something that helped me this week that I will continue doing is transcribing and formatting each package's script separately. Watching each story separately and making sure it matches the script as well as fixing the formats made it easy to just copy and paste each script. That way I knew everything was correct and just had to worry about my anchor ledes and returns later on.

At the studio, everyone did well, even though we had a long pause between shows. Everyone behind the scenes clicked and worked together really well. I felt that this was the show where everyone fully understood what was happening and was ready to go. Everybody just communicated well, and I think that’s why the taping ran smoother this show.

Overall I am really proud of everyone for this show. Even with the weird two weeks because of the holiday everyone’s packages got better, which made my job easier. I am also proud of my AP and me. We both did a better job this week in terms of writing the scripts. It makes you feel more confident when you give the final script to Professor Marra and Scatterday, and they give it back with fewer changes. This show definitely gave everyone more confidence and energy and I can’t wait to see how that continues in show 4.
