J. Ford Huffman

Independent News-Media Strategist | Retired Deputy Managing Editor at USA Today

J. Ford Huffman has advised Dubai’s Gulf News, India’s Hindustan Times, San Francisco Chronicle, The Washington Post and Las Vegas Review-Journal. He designed the first prototype editions of USA TODAY, where he later was a deputy managing editor. He has trained journalists across the U.S. and India, and in cities such as Budapest, Warsaw, Prague, Halifax and San Jose (Costa Rica) He directed the redesigns of a dozen newspapers.  

A magna cum laude graduate at WVU, he was managing editor of the Daily Athenaeum, a member of Mountain honorary and Kappa Tau Alpha national journalism honorary, Outstanding Journalism Graduate at Reed School of Journalism (now Reed College of Media), and he interned at the Wheeling News-Register. 

He is board chair of the nonprofit Student Veterans of America (the largest student organization in the U.S.),co-edited a Library Journal“notable” book (Marine Corps University Press’ “The End of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”) and has reviewed books for Military Times, San Francisco Chronicle and Chicago Tribune. He has completed 48 marathon races and was coordinator of D.C. Front Runners. He makes art that has been exhibited in Washington, D.C., galleries including the Watergate.
