
Alan Cline
Originally hailing from the Mountain State, Alan Cline is a Dramatic Baritone currently serving as an Adjunct Instructor of Voice at West Virginia University. He has appeared on stages across North America and in Europe in opera, theater, concert, and recital. Some of his recent highlights include the title role in Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi, Verdi’s Rigoletto, Don Carlos, and La Traviata, Bizet’s Carmen, Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel, and in musical theater in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and Beauty and the Beast. He is also a frequent interpreter of Bach and has appeared across the nation performing as a soloist in cantatas, the St. Matthew and St. John Passions, and the B Minor Mass. In concert, some of his recent highlights include the Vaughan Williams Sea Symphony, Beethoven 9, Carmina Burana, and the Verdi Requiem.
Dr. Cline is a frequent competitor at the highest levels, having twice won the Pittsburgh District of the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition and the Great Lakes Region, earning a spot as a national semi-finalist in 2018 and performing on stage at the Met. In 2023, he won the Irma Cooper Prize at the national finals of the National Association of Teachers of Singing Artist Awards in New York City. More recently, he and his duet partner were named winners in the Pittsburgh Concert Society Major Auditions. He also has extensive choral experience, having performed with the Voices Chamber Ensemble and First Inversion ensemble in Rochester, NY, the Pittsburgh Mendelssohn Choir, and co-founding Voices of the Valley, a professional vocal chamber ensemble based in Wheeling, WV.
He holds a Bachelor’s of Music in Voice Performance from West Liberty University, a Master’s of Music in Voice Performance from the Eastman School of Music, and a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Voice Performance from West Virginia University. Prior to serving on faculty at WVU, he held similar positions at Houghton College and West Virginia Wesleyan College. When not teaching or performing, he can be found at home with his wife and daughter in Wheeling, WV.
