FAQ

  1. What is chamber music?
Chamber music is music played by small ensembles without a conductor, one person to a part (traditionally a group small enough that they could fit in a “chamber” or parlor room). Every part matters equally in chamber music, and the group must work together to make musical decisions for a successful performance. Chamber music teaches us not only musical skills, but also how to function in a group and develop interpersonal relationships, vital skills for any profession!
  2. What ages/levels are accepted?
We encourage applications from undergraduate and graduate music students, high school students entering 9th grade and above, professionals and adult amateurs. Instruments considered for 2025 include violin, viola, cello and bass. Students will be placed in groups with others of similar ages and playing ability. We will consider all levels of applicants, but placement in a group is contingent upon finding suitable chamber music partners. Younger students may be considered on a case-by-base basis and must be accompanied by an adult.
  3. How do I apply?
Submit the application form at the link above. Within the application form, you will be asked to submit a link to a recording. This recording should be an accurate representation of your current playing level so that you can be placed in a group with others with similar levels of experience. Suggested repertoire includes concertos, solo pieces, etudes, prior chamber music recordings etc. Application for 2025 coming soon.
  4. Are there scholarships available?
Limited partial tuition scholarships are available for students for whom the cost of attendance is prohibitive. Please contact marygrace.johnson@mail.wvu.edu to discuss options.
