Undergraduate Auditions and Portfolio Reviews

Students interested in attending the WVU College of Creative Arts and Media to pursue a degree in the School of Music, the School of Theatre and Dance, or select programs in the School of Art and Design are required to participate in an audition or portfolio review for their respective program.

View Audition/Portfolio Requirements

The following undergraduate majors do NOT require a portfolio or audition: those in the Reed School of Media and Communications including Advertising and Public Relations, Integrated Marketing Communications, Journalism, Multidisciplinary Media Studies and Sports and Adventure Media; Art History and Museum Professions, Design Studies, Fashion Design and Merchandising, Game Design and Interactive Media, and Interior Architecture.

Whenever possible, we encourage students to attend a live audition or portfolio day event, typically held in January or February. Private auditions/reviews as well as video options vary by studio.

  1. Be sure to complete the West Virginia University Application.

    You may secure your interview time before or after your University application is completed. However, an admission decision for your program cannot be made until after you have been admitted to West Virginia University.

  2. Review the audition and portfolio review requirements for your program.

    The following bachelor's degree programs require an audition or portfolio review:

    • Acting BFA *
    • Art and Design BFA ^
    • Art Education BFA ^
    • Dance BA *
    • Music BA *
    • Music Composition BMus *
    • Music Education BMus *
    • Music Performance BMus *
    • Music Therapy BMus *
    • Music and Health BS *
    • Musical Theatre BFA *
    • Theatre Design and Technology BFA ^

    Music, Theatre, and Dance Auditions
    Auditions for the School of Music, School of Theatre & Dance are offered on-campus during designated Audition Day events. Private auditions may also be scheduled during the week (please note that Musical Theatre auditions are not available as private appointments).

    Digital Submissions
    Video submissions are accepted for Music, Theatre, and Dance programs. Please complete the program application found on this page, then submit your video through SlideRoom.

    Art, Design, and Theatre Design & Technology Portfolios
    Portfolios for the School of Art & Design and Theatre Design & Technology must be submitted digitally. We highly recommend attending an on-campus interview, as these are strongly considered for scholarship opportunities.

    Regardless of audition or portfolio format, all students are required to complete a program application.

  3. Register for an audition or portfolio review.

Register for Your POrtfolio review or Audition

Get prepared by reviewing the audition and portfolio review requirements for your program. If applying to a BFA Art and Design or Theatre program, you must submit media via SlideRoom prior to coming to campus. Media uploads must be submitted at least two days prior to your interview.

School of Art and Design

All School of Art and Design applicants are eligible for scholarship funding, and must submit a portfolio to be considered. Only students pursing an Art and Design BFA or an Art Education BFA are required to submit a portfolio.

The portfolio is not used as a screening tool. It allows us to assess your skills to map out the best course of study. If you have questions or would like tips or advice on what to include in your portfolio, contact James Froemel at jfroemel@mail.wvu.edu.

All Music programs require an audition.

School of Theatre and Dance

Students interested in Musical Theatre, Dance and Acting must participate in an audition. Theatre Design and Technology students must submit a portfolio for review.

Audition and Portfolio Review Registration for 2027 Admission will open September 1, 2026.
