WVU School of Music CELLO applicants may find audition requirements below.
Undergraduate
Performance
- One caprice/etude such as Piatti, Popper, Duport, Dotzauer, Matz etc.
- A movement from a standard concerto (or work of equivalent difficulty) and a movement of solo Bach from the Six Suites.
- All major and melodic minor three octave scales.
Music Education, Music Therapy, Music and Health, Bachelor of Arts, or Composition
- One etude such as Piatti, Popper, Duport, Dotzauer, Lee, Matz, etc.
- Two contrasting works from two different stylistic periods (Baroque, Classical, Romantic, or 20th Century or 21st Century). Selections could include individual movements from a concerto, sonata, or suite. Please contact Dr. Ellis to discuss appropriate repertoire.
- A scale may be requested at the audition
Music Industry, Commercial Music
- Two contrasting selections of music that represent the applicant’s current level of performance
- A scale may be requested at the audition
Master of Music
Audition repertoire for MM should include 45 minutes of performance, from which the committee will select about 30 minutes at the audition. Suggested repertoire should be equivalent to a Bachelor of Music senior recital and could include a concerto, sonata, show piece, solo Bach, a contemporary piece, and standard orchestral excerpts. Repertoire should be representative of the applicant’s abilities and strengths, show stylistic variety, and highlight musical interests. Works customarily performed from memory in public recitals should be performed from memory at the audition. Early in the application process potential students should contact the major teacher in their area and discuss audition repertoire possibilities.
Doctor of Musical Arts
Audition repertoire for the DMA should include 60 minutes of performance, from which the committee will select about 30 minutes at the audition. Suggested repertoire should be equivalent to a Master of Music recital and could include a concerto, sonata, show piece, solo Bach, a contemporary piece, and standard orchestral excerpts. Repertoire should be representative of the applicant’s abilities and strengths, show stylistic variety, and highlight musical interests. Works customarily performed from memory in public recitals should be performed from memory at the audition.
