WVU School of Music VOICE applicants may find audition requirements below.
Undergraduate
- A minimum of three songs, two of which should be from the standard classical art song repertoire. At least one of the two should be in English. The third song may be classical, or it may come from the musical theatre repertoire.
All songs should be sung from memory with accompaniment.
Graduate
Applicants will offer a short program, approximately 15-20 minutes in length, with a minimum of 5 selections that reflect varying styles, periods, and languages.
A minimum of 3 languages must be represented; at least one selection must be in English.
A minimum of 1 and maximum of 2 arias may be offered; the second may be from an oratorio, cantata, or masterwork.
All selections performed by memory (except oratorio or cantata) with live piano accompaniment.
On Campus Audition (Audition Days)
WVU will provide an accompanist for all regularly scheduled on-campus audition days; applicants will be given time to communicate musical and dramatic cues with the accompanist prior to the audition.
Depending on the applicants’ program of choice, collaboration with an accompanist or use of backing tracks may be appropriate. Please check with the voice area coordinator.
Digital copies of all scores should be sent to the Voice Area Coordinator at least 1 week prior to the audition date. Legal copies of all scores should be available at the audition.
On Campus Audition (Non-Audition Days)
WVU encourages students to visit campus and arrange auditions outside of regularly scheduled audition days; applicants may either bring their own accompanist or request one from WVU for a fee.
Depending on the applicants’ program of choice, collaboration with an accompanist or use of backing tracks may be appropriate. Please check with the voice area coordinator.

Recorded Auditions
WVU will accept recorded auditions as a pre-screen for those applicants who can demonstrate significant hardship in traveling to campus.
Depending on the applicants’ program of choice, collaboration with an accompanist or use of backing tracks may be appropriate. Please check with the voice area coordinator.
A follow-up, live video audition will be offered to those who pass the pre-screening.
Repertoire requirements are the same as live, on campus auditions.
