The Art Museum of West Virginia University (WVU) will host an opening reception to celebrate its spring exhibits on Friday, January 24, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public, allowing visitors to get a first look at the new exhibits, speak with some of the artists and enjoy light refreshments.
"We are thrilled to present an anniversary exhibition featuring works from the Art Museum collection that celebrate our history of supporting forward thinking artists, and a duo show between artists that have had long standing creative conversations," said Aaron Levi Garvey, director of the Art Museum of WVU. "These exhibitions highlight the wide range of ideas the Art Museum of WVU promotes and supports."
“Screams and Whispers” is a collaborative exhibition by artists Karin Broker and Patricia Bellan-Gillen. Bellan-Gillen's drawings use fairytale characters to explore themes of history and human experience. They surround Broker’s sculptures, which explore gender expectations and the complexity of womanhood.
“Radiant Pages: The Art of the Book” was co-curated by 2024 Art Museum of WVU Faculty Fellow Adam Komisaruk, Art Museum of WVU Curator Robert Bridges and Curator of Education Heather Harris. Drawing from the Art Museum of WVU’s collection, it invites visitors to explore how a book can “radiate” beyond its pages and impact the wider world.
Lastly, “Thirty: Celebrating 30 Years of the Deem Distinguished Lecture Series,” honors the legacy of support by Alison and Patrick Deem. Since 1995, the Deem Distinguished Lecture Series has brought artists and arts professionals of international reputation to campus, including three MacArthur Foundation “genius” awardees. This exhibition highlights the work of these visiting artists from the past three decades.
“The three exhibitions are a great mix of historical and contemporary art reflecting cross-disciplinary approaches to presentation,” said Robert Bridges, curator of the Art Museum of WVU.
The opening reception is free and open to the public, providing an opportunity for both regular attendees and newcomers to get acquainted with the Art Museum of WVU and the new exhibits, which will be on display through May 11.
