The WVU School of Music is pleased to present its first “Halloween Spooktacular: A Collaborative Concert” in the Lyell B. Clay Concert Theatre at the WVU Canady Creative Arts Center Oct. 30 at 7:30 p.m.
In this musical event, bands, symphonies and orchestras from across the School of Music will come together to treat listeners to spooky tunes and Halloween favorites, like “The Addams’ Family,” “This is Halloween,” “I Put a Spell on You,” Bach’s “Toccata and Fugue in D minor,” the “Imperial March” from “Star Wars,” selections from “Harry Potter” and more.
Ensembles include the Wind Symphony, Jazz Ensemble I, Symphony Orchestra, Cello Choir, Flute Studio, Percussion Ensemble, Funk & Soul Ensemble, Clarinet Choir and others. They’ll be set up throughout the theatre “prism”-style, with groups spread across the stage and into the theatre aisles. Each performance will be enhanced with special lighting and effects.
Marla Hopkins, a junior Music Education major, plays piccolo for the Pride of West Virginia Marching Band and flute/piccolo for the Wind Symphony. She can’t wait for people to hear all the ensembles play and see how all their performances fit together into one big celebration of fall and Halloween.
“This is unlike any of our other concerts throughout the year. It’s a collaboration of so many ensembles and groups across the School of Music with an interesting and festive theme. We will play familiar tunes that fuel the spirit of all things spooky and Halloween,” Hopkins said.
“How often do you get to hear a Wind Symphony, Jazz Ensemble, Orchestra, a Cello Choir and more all in the same program? It's going to be a blast,” said Alexis Mason, a senior Music Performance major. She plays saxophone and is excited to perform Bach’s “Toccata and Fugue in D minor” with the full wind band.
Admission to the concert is $10 for adults and $5 for kids. Performers will be donning costumes for the event, and audience members are encouraged to come dressed up as well.
Those attending the annual Trunk-or-Treat at the Hope Coliseum should be on the lookout for “Halloween Spooktacular” vouchers that may be redeemed at the Canady Creative Arts Center box office for one free adult ticket with the purchase of a child ticket. Families are invited to walk across the street after they’re done collecting their treats and finish the evening with a spooky musical celebration.
