World Music concert

The West Virginia University School of Music presents its spring World Music Concert April 10, bringing together a wide range of global traditions in one thrilling evening of live performance. The show takes place in two parts, with start times at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Select the 6 p.m. option to start the evening in the Gladys G. Davis Theatre with the WVU Steel Bands and African Music and Dance Ensemble, featuring Ugandan musician and dancer Haruna Walusimbi and WVU alumnus Mark Stone. Then move to the Douglas O. Blaney Lobby for the second half of the evening, where attendees can enjoy a spread of themed hors d’oeuvres and refreshments as they listen to the Latin Percussion Ensemble and the Celtic Ensemble.

Attendees who choose the 7 p.m. option will start in the Douglas O. Blaney Lobby with the Latin Percussion and Celtic ensembles, then continue their evening in the Gladys G. Davis Theatre with the Steel Bands and African Music and Dance Ensemble.

Regardless of start time, concertgoers will be treated to the same great experience.

“The World Music Concert is always exciting,” said Jake Voight, World Music Graduate Assistant. “We’re able to play music from so many different cultures all in one performance.”

Another unique aspect of the concert is the way students connect with music outside of the standard concert setting.

“It’s always such a wonderful vibe you get sucked into,” said Jade Neubauer, a Steel Band member. “You get lost in the movement and the rhythms, and it’s always a blast to both play and hear.”

The World Music Concert is open to the public and offers something for everyone, whether you’re already familiar with these traditions or just curious to hear something new. Tickets are $12 for adults and $7 for children and seniors. Buy tickets at go.wvu.edu/world-music-concert, by phone at 304-293-SHOW or in person at the box office located in the main lobby of the WVU Canady Creative Arts Center, Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
