30 students awarded with scholarship honoring Valerie Canady

The 2024 Canady Scholars sitting together with their awards                       Students received their awards at ceremony on November 14.

The College of Creative Arts and Media recognized 30 students with The Valerie Canady Charitable Trust Foundation scholarship. Each year, The Valerie Canady Charitable Trust Foundation awards the scholarship to students who have a grade point average of 3.5 or above, are verbally fluent in two languages and have received three faculty letters of reference.

The foundation is named for Valerie Canady, a Morgantown native and WVU summa cum laude graduate, who was among 270 people killed in the 1988 terrorist bombing of Pan Am flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland. Valerie worked for H.J. Heinz Co. in London, and was an accomplished linguist, pianist and artist in various means of expression. Her parents, William and Loulie Canady, created the scholarship award in her honor.

“Loulie and William created it with the belief that art and language are important tools for establishing greater understanding among humanity,” said Keith Jackson, dean of the College of Creative Arts and Media. “Their dedication to honoring Valerie through these causes is an inspiration to all who look to culture as a vehicle for improving the human condition.”
