WVU alumnus Scott Simons returns to campus to inspire the next generation of music professionals

Scott Simons

The West Virginia University School of Music will welcome distinguished alumnus Scott Simons back to campus Oct. 5-8 for a series of guest lectures, masterclasses, and student engagement events focused on today's music industry.

Simons, who holds a bachelor of arts in Music Composition, has built an extraordinary career as a music director, songwriter, composer, producer, pianist, vocalist, and educator in Los Angeles. His work spans some of television's most recognizable programs, major recording artists, film and television soundtracks, and live concert productions.

Simons currently serves as music director, consultant, and pianist for NBC's “America's Got Talent,” a role he has held since Season 8. His extensive television credits also include “America's Got Talent Champions,” “America's Got Talent All Stars,” “America's Got Talent Fantasy League,” “The X Factor USA,” “Little Big Shots,” “Building the Band,” “America’s Big Deal,” and numerous other network productions.

Beyond television, Simons has served as a music director for internationally recognized artists including NewJeans, Cai XuKun, and numerous touring performers. His songwriting, production, and composition credits include projects for Nickelodeon, Disney, NBC, ESPN, Freeform, The CW, DreamWorks, Netflix, and recordings with artists such as Wiz Khalifa, Allen Stone, Mitch Grassi, Drake Bell, Shoshana Bean, Dirty Vegas, and many others.

His voice has also become familiar to millions through television theme songs. He is the lead vocalist for “Paw Patrol” and “VeggieTales,” a co-lead vocalist for “The Thundermans,” and contributing vocalist for “DuckTales” (2017) and other major productions.

Despite an international career, Simons has remained closely connected to WVU. Since 2020, he has returned regularly as a guest lecturer, songwriting instructor, creative consultant, mentor, and member of the College of Creative Arts and Media Visiting Committee, sharing real-world industry experience with students pursuing careers in music, entertainment, and media.

During his Oct. 5-8 residency, Simons will meet with students across multiple disciplines, discussing topics including songwriting, music production, television music direction, touring, entrepreneurship, and building a sustainable career in today's evolving music industry. His visit provides students with a unique opportunity to learn directly from a WVU alumnus who has established himself as one of the industry's most versatile and accomplished professionals.

"Scott's career demonstrates the incredible opportunities available to musicians who combine creativity, versatility, and professionalism," said Keith Jackson, dean of the WVU College of Creative Arts and Media. “We're excited to welcome him back to campus to share his experiences and inspire our students."

The residency reflects the School of Music's ongoing commitment to connecting students with accomplished alumni and current industry professionals to provide insight into today's rapidly changing music and entertainment landscape.
