Learning Outcomes

  1. Harmonic knowledge and foundation: Learning to read chord symbols (like "C", "Am", "G/B") above the lyrics or a single melodic staff, rather than reading traditional grand staff. No worries if you don't read the music staff. We will focus on learning all major/minor triads and their inversions just by the chord symbols.
  2. Rhythm and Groove: Starting with playing solid blocks in constant rhythms, level up to syncopated patterns, arpeggios, or specific rhythmic accents to drive the music forward and add energy. We will focus on one to three different rhythmic patterns in this session.
  3. Common Progressions: Become familiar with widely used chord progressions in pop and worship music, such as the I-V-vi-IV (C-G-Am-F in the key of C) progression, which forms the basis of countless songs. Student might be able to create their own music after this.
