West Virginia University’s GPS-Photography in France course offers students an in-depth look at how place shaped the transformation of landscape art in 19th-century Paris, its suburbs, and the surrounding countryside where artist colonies thrived.
Through lectures and hands-on demonstrations, students will explore camera operations, Adobe software techniques, alternative cameras, and mixed media processes. They will also study the discovery of photography in France and the key figures who defined the movement. Enrollment is intentionally limited to ensure close faculty interaction and personalized mentorship.
Students will experiment with a range of 19th-century photographic processes and develop their own creative responses to place. Their work may include landscapes, intimate nature studies, documentary approaches, and portraiture.
Course sites include world-class museums and historic landmarks in Paris, the coastal village of Honfleur, the Forest of Fontainebleau, and other artist enclaves. Readings and discussions on the history, culture, and environment of these regions will further deepen students’ understanding and enrich their creative practice.
