Jazz Style and Improvisation

Ages high school and up.

The class will combine lecture-style instruction with hands-on learning experiences. Students will gain a fundamental understanding of jazz harmony, technique, theory, history, and style. This knowledge will prepare them for participation in a big band, gigging with a band, or joining a local jam session. The curriculum will include working with big band charts, combo tunes, and solo transcriptions, allowing students to apply their knowledge in a practical context.

Course Objectives

  • Equip students with the ability to improvise over given chord changes.
  • Teach students to play in various jazz styles, including bebop and blues.
  • Develop proper jazz technique among students.
  • Provide a foundational understanding of jazz theory and history.

A class is usually cancelled when registration is less than five (5) participants. In case of cancellation of the class, all students already enrolled will be notified immediately. Submit your registration form as soon as possible to ensure your spot. We will reach out to you to process payment closer to the first day of the group class.
