This class and ensemble focuses on the music and culture of Trinidad through the playing of steel pan. This experiential ensemble will expose students to the steel pan (an instrument that originated in the Caribbean), the playing style and technique of the instruments, and musical styles associated with Trinidad and Tobago. No prior musical experience is required for this ensemble.

Learning Outcomes

Repertoire
The group will learn 1-2 pieces of traditional Soca and/or Calypso style music. The group will also learn 1-2 arrangements of music outside of the traditional repertory. Rep will be decided based on the overall level of the group after a rehearsal or two and at the director’s discretion.
Required Materials
- Mallets (will be made available through CP Panworks after the first rehearsal. All individuals are required to purchase one set of mallets for the instrument they start on).
- Music in the form of physical copy or pdf (parts will be sent by the instructor for the participant to print or save on a device).
- Recommended, but not required, a small binder or folder for music
Attendance Policy
For this ensemble, or any ensemble, to be successful all participants must make every effort to attend every session for several reasons. First, the drums must be set up and taken down every single session and for this reason, it is requested that all participants arrive 5-10 minutes early to set up their instruments. Secondly there are the different parts like other ensembles. For example, if the basses are missing, the ensemble sounds hollow. Finally, we have limited time to both learn and prepare for a final presentation of what the ensemble has achieved. However, it is understood that things will happen, and life sometimes throws curve balls. It is requested that any absence be communicated to the director. Please understand though, that no refunds will be issued for missed rehearsals.
How do I prepare for the first rehearsal?
- Listen to this playlist of traditional pan and Caribbean music created by the director to start identifying characteristics of soca/calypso music.
- Prepare your folder or binder with paper and a pencil to make any notes after the first rehearsal, and to prepare for the delivery of music. The first rehearsal will require no sheet music and be taught completely by rote/aural. Music will be sent after the first rehearsal.
- Come in with a positive attitude ready to learn and experience a new style of music

A class is usually cancelled when registration is less than five (5) participants. In case of cancellation of the class, all students already enrolled will be notified immediately.
