We're excited to welcome you to the School of Art and Design at West Virginia University.

Undergraduate Admissions

Some bachelor degree majors in the School of Art and Design require both an application through West Virginia University and a portfolio submission.

Graduate Admissions

  1. Apply to WVU

    Apply to West Virginia University online at graduateadmissions.wvu.edu/how-to-apply. This application will require you to upload your transcripts, resume, letter of intent, three letters of recommendation, and prompt you to pay an application fee. The application deadline occurs annually on January 15.

  2. Submit Your Portfolio

    Submit your portfolio to the WVU School of Art and Design at wvuart.slideroom.com.

    Submit the following information for the degree you are interested in:

    • MFA Studio Art: Portfolio: 20 images or video documentation of recent work
    • MA Art Education: PDF writing sample; Applicants with teaching experience may include images of student work
    • MA Art History: PDF writing sample of a recent research paper
    • MA in Game Design: Portfolio; Up to 5 representative samples of your work with a total viewing duration of no longer than 60 minutes, including interactive projects, game prototypes, game components, graphic imagery, virtual environments, virtual character studies, photographs, or video documentation of the same.

    Applicants may be required to take additional course work after careful review of undergraduate transcripts.

    After your WVU application has been submitted, the School of Art and Design will notify you and the Office of Admissions of the results of your portfolio review.

Assistantships and Financial Aid

Applicants may also apply to one of several fully funded Teachings Assistantships. Many students who do not have assistantships still receive financial support from the School in the form of tuition waivers. Applicants may also apply for financial aid through the WVU financial aid office.

International Applicants

International Applicants are required to submit qualifying TOEFL scores, and may be required to submit additional supporting documents.
